Lets do a full dive into understanding narcissist projection. But not only cover the topic, also include how to identify it not only now but in the past, with real life examples and coping and healing strategies that I’ve personally used to help me in my healing journey.
What Is Narcissist Projection?
Understanding narcissist projection is understanding the psychological roots. A narcissist feels that they need to be flawless so as a defense mechanism the insecure narc needs to externalize their shame and guilt, so that they can remain feeling flawless.
If you get in trouble and someone else is involved of course you are going to call them to the carpet as well. Understanding narcissist projection is different is seeing how they are manipulating what happened to escape any accountability.
Understanding narcissist projection is also understanding that they don’t realize they’re doing it. All they really understand is someone is saying they are not perfect so it must be someone else’s fault that they are appearing imperfect and then blaming that person.
How Narcissist Projection Works
Sometimes a narcissist will just come out and accuse you of what they are doing, whether it’s lying, cheating, or stealing. If a narcissist is accusing you of something you didn’t do, it most likely means they did that and are trying to get you to feel it’s you not them.
Have you ever noticed that when a narcissist is telling a story about something to someone else the past is rewritten to where they were the hero and you were the one that made the mistake that they made but you corrected. This shifts the blame to you in others eyes.
Understanding narcissist projection prepares you for the combo punch with projection + gaslighting. See if they overlap the two tactics, they can not only make you feel guilty for their faults by gaslighting you, you feel so guilty that when they project their actions on you.
A narcissist might use emotional dumping as a tactic as well making your emotion state the cause for the behavior or mood. Mine would say that me crying put them in a bad mood, and asked if I could not cry in front of them.
Understanding narcissist projection can prepare you for triangulation and external manipulation. This is the peer pressure tactic, everybody else agrees with me, kind of statement.
My narcissist would always add in, my friends agree with me, I always forgot to check with them if they actually did, and looking back realize there is no way they did, but I believed them.
Signs You’re Experiencing Narcissist Projection
1. You feel like how you are being accused of behaving is completely against what you believe. You are so shocked you deep dive into yourself and forget to notice it’s the narc’s behaviors not yours. Your character is still you.
2. You are always walking on eggshells being careful of what you say or do. Or if something negative is happening you handle it and cover it up so you don’t upset the narcissist.
3. You are constantly blamed for things that are not your fault. Half the things your blamed for are things that the narcissist didn’t agree with your decision which would have been the right way to go so now it’s your fault for them being wrong.
4. Your emotions are an inconvenience or ignored completely. Everyone is allowed to have emotions and no one should be told their emotions/feelings are wrong, they are how you feel.
5. You’re constantly questioning your reality. Constantly feeling guilty and not even sure what for, or you feel unstable like you don’t know what to expect next or what just happened.
6. You remember things but they are rewritten by the narcissist making you to blame for anything that went wrong, while they claim the hero role for things that went right, and when you point out the flaw in the story, you’re told you’re wrong.
7. You bear all the responsibility for any regret or bad decision made ever. Whether you were involved in the decision or not, you are somehow magically responsible for only the bad ones. They claim all the good ones for themselves.
8. You grow used to being blamed, when projection is normalized in your communication with a narcissist it is a sign that you are in too deep it is time to get out.
